ATP roundup: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga earns win in France

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga earned his first win since last March with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over qualifier Kacper Zuk of Poland at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, France, on Tuesday.

Tsonga, once No. 5 in the world, went 1-8 in 2021 and played just two matches in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

No. 5 seed Filip Krajinovic of Serbia was a 7-5, 7-6 (3) winner over Alexei Popyrin of Australia. Frenchmen Gilles Simon and Pierre-Hugues Herbert were among the day’s other winners.

Tata Open Maharashtra

Seeded players Stefano Travaglia (No. 8) and Emil Ruusuvuori (No. 6) won their matches in Pune, India.

Ruusuvuori defeated Egor Gerasimov 6-0, 7-6 (11) while Travaglia needed three sets to dispatch Ramkumar Ramanathan 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3.

Vit Kopriva, Kamil Majchrzak, Joao Sousa, Aleksandar Vukic, Elias Ymer and Bernabe Zapata Miralles all won to advance to the next round.

Cordoba Open

Fifth-seeded Federico Delbonis of Argentina was upset by Spain’s Carlos Taberner 6-4, 6-2 at Cordoba, Argentina.

Delbonis was one of three Argentines to lose in their home tournament, joining Federico Coria and Francisco Cerundolo. Juan Pablo Ficovich ousted his countryman Coria. Argentines Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Sebastian Baez were able to advance.

Sixth-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain defeated Andrej Martin of Slovakia 6-4, 6-3 to advance. Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena and Carlos Taberner also posted victories.
