The Houston Astros are signing catcher Jason Castro to a two-year, $7 million deal, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

The contract could be worth up to $9 million depending on the number of games the 33-year-old plays behind the plate, according to ESPN.

Castro, who began his career with Houston (2010, 2012-16), split the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres and batted .188 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 27 games.

An All-Star in 2013, Castro has a career .230 batting average with 88 homers and 301 RBIs in 852 games.

Martin Maldonado, 34, made 46 starts at catcher for the Astros in 2020 and batted .215 with six homers and 24 RBIs. He signed a two-year, $7 million deal in December 2019 and is on the books for $3.5 million in 2021.
