The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired utility man Ildemaro Vargas from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday for cash considerations.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks designated infielder Domingo Leyba for assignment.

Vargas, 29, arrived in the major leagues in 2017 with the Diamondbacks and has played with four teams over the past five seasons. He was designated for assignment on Friday by the Pirates, who picked him up off waivers on May 17 from the Chicago Cubs.

In 158 career games, Vargas is a .239 hitter with eight home runs and 38 RBIs for the Diamondbacks (2017-20), Minnesota Twins (2020), Cubs (2020-21) and Pirates. In seven games with the Pirates this season he had one hit in 13 at-bats.

A versatile defender, Vargas has played six positions in his career, seeing his most action (73 games) at second base.

Leyba, 25, did not have a hit in 22 at-bats this season for Arizona and is 7-for-47 (.149) in 34 career games, all with the Diamondbacks.
