In major breaking news Tuesday, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning got benched in lieu of Geno Smith. Manning handled the situation with class, but his father Archie said his son is very saddened.
“This breaks his heart,” Archie said, per Gary Myers of New York Daily News. “And that’s okay. It’s supposed to.”
“It’s football. It’s life.” “Eli is not bitter,” he said. “Just hurt.”
Football it is and life does go on. But, Manning being benched for a quarterback who has attempted only two passes — missing both — is a humiliating situation. Head coach Ben McAdoo apparently wants to give both Smith and rookie Davis Webb opportunities to be featured under center. The Giants are currently 2-9 and are clearly in desperation mode.
Manning will serve as the backup quarterback this Sunday, breaking his 210 consecutive starts streak. The two-time Super Bowl champion is the Giants’ all-time leading passer.
