Los Angeles Angels right-hander Noah Syndergaard was scratched from Friday night’s start against the host Chicago White Sox due to a non-COVID illness.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said Syndergaard “wasn’t feeling well” but declined to reveal what symptoms the 29-year-old was dealing with.

Syndergaard is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts in his first season with Los Angeles.

Right-hander Jimmy Herget will take the ball first for the Angels on Friday. Herget, 28, is 1-0 with a 6.48 ERA in eight relief appearances this season and Friday’s start will be his second in 52 career appearances.

The Angels also activated shortstop David Fletcher from the 10-day injured list. Fletcher has been sidelined since leaving an April 11 game against the Miami Marlins due to a left hip strain.

Fletcher was 1-for-13 in five games this before the injury. He is a career .279 hitter in four-plus big league seasons.

The Angels placed infielder Jack Mayfield on the taxi squad to create a roster opening. Mayfield is batting .281 (9-for-32) with one homer and three RBIs in 10 games for the Angels.
