Americans outlast Netherlands, advance to Olympics semifinals

Megan Rapinoe converted the winning kick in the shootout on Friday to lift the United States women’s national team to victory over the Netherlands at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Yokohama, Japan.

Rose Lavelle, Alex Morgan and Christen Press also made their penalty kicks as the Americans won 4-2 in PKs following a 2-2 tie For tafter extra time. The U.S. advanced to the semifinals on Monday to face Canada, which secured a 4-3 win over Brazil on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw following extra time.

Alyssa Naeher had five saves through extra time before making a pair of stops during the penalty kicks session.

Naeher denied Vivianne Miedema during penalty kicks after the latter had scored in each half for the Netherlands.

For the U.S., Lynn Williams’ cross was headed home by Sam Mewis in the 28th minute. Williams tallied three minutes later before Miedema capped her two-goal performance by beating Naeher in the 54th minute.

Lineth Beerensteyn of the Netherlands and Americans Press and Morgan saw potential go-ahead goals in extra time negated due to offside calls.

Australia and Sweden will meet in the other semifinal.
