By now, it’s well known that Washington Redskins seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams wants out of the nation’s capital.
Williams, 31, sat out the entire 2019 season due to contract issues and a rift with then-Redskins President Bruce Allen. Even with head coach Ron Rivera and another front office running the ship, Williams has demanded a trade.
While nothing happened on that front during Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft, Washington still has Williams on the block.
In a shocking piece of information, Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams in on trading for Williams. The offensive tackle’s agent initially started to push the rumor.
There’s so much to look at here. As Donaldson notes, San Francisco already has a multi-time Pro Bowler holding down the fort at left tackle in that of Joe Staley. Though, there’s still some questions about his willingness to return for next season.
Washington is also said to be looking for a second-round pick in return for Williams. San Francisco is without picks in Rounds 2-4, spanning Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Needless to say, the 49ers are in win-now mode after earning a trip to the Super Bowl last season. They could potentially look to move a draft pick next year and a veteran player to land Williams. Realistically, that would only happen if Staley were to in fact retire.
