Dodgers’ star Justin Turner placed on injured list

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed third baseman Justin Turner on the 10-day injured list, losing one of their key sluggers to a hamstring injury as the MLB postseason race heats up.

Turner, who hasn’t played since Friday, strained his left hamstring against the Texas Rangers. After several days off, the club determined on Tuesday that it was time to place him on the injured list.

Latest news on Justin Turner’s injury

When Turner suffered the strain on Friday, manager Dave Roberts was hopeful the star third baseman could return this week. After a few days of rest, it became clear that Turner would need to be sidelined even longer.

With Turner sidelined, Los Angeles loses the No. 3 hitter in its lineup. The 35-year-old third baseman continues to defy Father Time, playing at a high level for MLB’s best team.

While he is no longer hitting for much power, Turner has been a consistent run producer for the Dodgers and excels at getting on base. Turner carries a .282/.384/.410 slash line with 20 RBIs and has drawn a walk in 10.1% of his at-bats.

In Turner’s absence, the Dodgers are turning to Edwin Rios. The 26-year-old primarily played third base at the Triple-A level this past season, appearing in 67 games at the hot corner.

In limited action this season, Rios holds a .276/.323/.690 slash line with three home runs in 31 at-bats.

Fortunately for the Dodgers, Turner’s hamstring strain is still believed to be minor and the club expects him to serve a short stint on the IL. When he returns, Los Angeles will be counting on him to help keep their lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
