Some absolutely huge news dropped around the college football world on Tuesday with the Big Ten announcing that it has canceled fall sports.

The conference still hopes to play its college football season in the spring, but that remains up in the air. Now, one of the biggest members of said conference is speaking out.

Nebraska releases statement, intent on playing college football this fall

There’s absolutely no reason to even try to read between the lines here. Based on previous reports and comments from Cornhuskers head football coach Scott Frost, it’s clear that Nebraska is looking at other avenues outside of the Big Ten to play this fall.

Could we see Nebraska and other teams join the Big 12?

After decades in the conference, Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten back in 2011. It could possibly decide to join other programs in becoming a member of the Big 12 for one season.

Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State are three other major Big Ten teams that could decide to play in another conference this season. As of right now, the Big 12, SEC and ACC are seemingly set to move forward with playing the 2020 season in less than three weeks.

This isn’t without precedent. After Notre Dame’s 2020 schedule was pretty much canceled due to Power Five entities going with conference-only schedules, the Irish decided to join the ACC for one season. We could very well see a repeat of this among other major teams in both the Big Ten and PAC-12.

It’s something to keep an eye on.
