It was a festive environment in D.C. Thursday evening as the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals hosted the New York Yankees to open the 2020 MLB season.

It also did not take too long before former NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton made a major statement at Nationals Park.

Coming off an injury-plagued 2019 campaign, Stanton blasted a 459-foot two-run homer off Max Scherzer in the top of the first.

Check this thing out. It had so many legs.

The 30-year-old Stanton played in just 18 games for New York a season ago. The team is going to need him back at his Miami Marlins form in order to take home that elusive World Series title during a truncated 2020 campaign.

Based on what we saw in his first at-bat of the season, Stanton might very well be up to the task.
