The college football season this fall is very much in flux right now, but as we await an answer here’s a spicy rumor for you to devour: Notre Dame and Alabama may kick off the schedule with a battle in Week 1.

Gary Stokan, President and CEO of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl and the annual Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game, is responsible for this rumor. He was on ESPN Radio Friday with the Thom Abraham Show when he dropped this bombshell:

Obviously there is nothing concrete here. But if anyone has inside knowledge about this it would be Stokan. And he’s not the only one who has teased a potential huge SEC vs. Notre Dame battle this season.

Given the upheaval nationally right now there would be no better way to hype up the college football season than by pitting the Fighting Irish against the Crimson Tide.

Notre Dame 2020 schedule disrupted by Pac-12 and Big Ten decisions

The Fighting Irish are still scheduled to open their season in Annapolis against Navy, as noted by UHND.com. However, the entire schedule was recently disrupted after both the Pac-12 and Big Ten announced they would be playing only against conference opponents in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to those decisions, Notre Dame lost three of its regularly-scheduled games on the 2020 college football schedule.

However, head coach Brian Kelly recently made it clear he isn’t stressing all of this because his phone has been ringing off the hook with potential matchups.

The coming season, if it happens, will certainly be different.
