WATCH: Alabama football with passionate plea for racial equality

Alabama's Nick Saban holds trophy after defeating Duke

We have seen it on a near never-ending loop since the murder of George Floyd late last month in Minneapolis.

Sports teams and figures speaking out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and push for racial equality. One top college football program is following suit.

Alabama football with passionate plea for racial equality

Written by offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, this video really is something else.

It brings back memories of what some foolishly thought was a bygone ara of widespread racial inequality in the United States. It was nearly 60 years ago that then President John F. Kennedy mobilized the National Guard to force desegregation on campus at Alabama, ultimately leading to the admissions of Vivian Malone and James A. Wallace. This represented one of the most divisive times since reconstruction following the American Civil War.

As for the Alabama football program, it’s one of the elite national powerhouses. Speaking up at this level will certainly make a difference. Given that the school is located in a state with widespread racial division dating back to its inception, that’s magnified further.

Sports teams and leagues continue to show their support for Black Lives Matter

In a shocking reversal of course earlier this month, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted that the league mishandled the Colin Kaepernick-led protests that started years back. The NFL now supports protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. It has also promised $250 million in donations over the next decade to combat “systemic racism,” as the league calls it, in the United States.

We’ve seen similar stands from NASCAR and other sports leagues. It really is a changing of the guard. As the Crimson Tide put it, “in this moment in history, we can’t be silent.”

Expect the players and teams to continue speaking out once the 2020 college football season hopefully starts in about two months.
