Two of the greatest college football programs in the history of the sport. Only four prior meetings between the national powerhouses.
That’s now going to change later this decade. Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith announced on Thursday that the Buckeyes will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in a home-and-home series.
Ohio State and Alabama will take part in a home-and-home series starting in 2027
This would qualify as some pretty stunning news. Both Alabama and Ohio State are known for playing relatively weak non-conference schedules. However, this changes the narrative in a big way.
We’re talking about two programs that have accounted for a combined 25 national championships throughout their history.
The Alabama-Ohio State rivalry consists of just four games between the two programs
The last time Alabama took on Ohio State was in the College Football Semifinal back on New Year’s Day of 2015. The Buckeyes came out on top by the score of 42-35, eventually taking out Oregon in the national title.
Prior to that, these two programs last met in the Citrus Bowl back in 1995. They’ve only taken on one another in a non-bowl game once with Alabama defeating Ohio State back in 1986. Their first matchup came in the Sugar Bowl back in 1978.
The 2020 college football season
Both Alabama and Ohio State are considered top-end contenders for the title this season. The Associated Press has Ohio State ranked No. 2 in its preseason poll with the Crimson Tide coming in at three.
The expectation is that both teams will remain powerhouses for the foreseeable future.
