As the Minnesota Twins prepare to play baseball amid the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve already seen multiple players test positive for the virus. Now the organization will sideline two of its top coaches for the 2020 season to protect them from the coronavirus.
Twins’ coaches Bob McClure, Bill Evers sidelined by team due to COVID-19 pandemic
Bullpen coach Bob McClure, 68, and major league coach Bill Evers, 66, will not be allowed to work this season by the Twins, per The Star Tribune’s LaVelle E. Neal.
The organization made the decision following an extensive review of medical histories for each of their staff members, which took age and existing medical conditions into consideration.
McClure was named the Twins’ bullpen coach this offseason and was expected to have a key role with the pitching staff. Evers was entering his second season on the coaching staff as an assistant.
Both coaches will still be on the team’s payroll and receive their salary for the 2020 season. They could eventually contribute as remote advisors for the team this year.
The coronavirus has most greatly impacted those over the age of 55, according to the Centers for Disease Control. While both coaches’ impact and presence will be missed, it’s good to see the Twins are looking out for the safety of their staff.
