Los Angeles Lakers to celebrate Juneteenth by making multiple charitable donations

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to return to their season July 30 at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Until then, one of the NBA title favorites are joining the rest of the sports world in celebrating the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States.

This isn’t too much of a surprise. The Lakers have been out in front as it relates to help enacting social change since the brutal murder of George Floyd back on May 25.

The face of the team, LeBron James, has been boisterous in support of racial equality and continues to do a lot within communities around the United States.

Impact of Juneteenth in the sports world

For some, Juneteenth has taken on added importance during the current racial division in the United States. In some ways, we have improved from this standpoint as a nation since slavery was outlawed back on June 19, 1865. In other ways, we’re stuck in an era of racial inequality.

That’s been the stance from the NBA and the broader sports world in recent weeks. The added significance of Juneteenth in 2020 has led teams to celebrate it as a holiday. It’s a day some believe should end up being a national holiday.

Backdrop of the NBA season resuming includes current situation in the United States

Players such as Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving have pushed back against the season resuming while protests continue to take over cities around the United States. Others believe that it will give players a platform to help enact change.

The season is slated to return at Walt Disney World in Orlando on July 30. Los Angeles is right up there with the Milwaukee Bucks as the favorite to come away with the title.
