The Oakland Athletics organization is feeling the first-hand impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The A’s announced on Friday that former minor league infielder Miguel Marte has passed away at the young age of 30 after contracting the virus.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Marte played in the A’s organization from 2008-12. He made it as far as Single-A ball, hitting a combined .251 with 16 homers and 117 RBI.
A GoFundMe page was set up on Marte’s behalf by his family. He is survived by his wife, Jasmin, twin girls and a young son.
Our thoughts obviously go out to the family and those close to Marte during these most difficult of times. It’s a clear reminder that the novel coronavirus doesn’t just impact the elderly and those with preexisting conditions.
