Crazy facts highlight incredibly weak first round of 2017 NFL Draft

The first round of the 2017 NFL Draft was not exactly loaded with elite NFL talent. A couple of different facts highlight this to a T.

Only 17 2017 first-round draft picks fifth-year options were picked up

On Monday, the final verdict was handed down on the entire first round of the 2017 NFL Draft class. Fifth-year options were due, and when it was all said and done, just 17 of them were picked up. Of the remaining 15, 13 of them were declined, and one player (Taco Charlton) was released (twice in the past eight months, in fact).

Only one of the players selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft has gotten an extension. Christian McCaffrey, who’s broken NFL records already, is now the highest-paid running back in the history of the league.

Taking this a step further in terms of what an absolute failure the top of the draft was in 2017, only one fifth-year option was picked up by players selected in the top five.

The biggest bust at this point has to be Mitchell Trubisky. The Chicago Bears traded up one spot to land him in the 2017 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s been a huge disappointment. Having the Bears decide against picking up his fifth-year option was not surprising, but it shows how little faith the organization has in him.

It just goes to show how much of a crapshoot the draft can be. It’s not an exact science, to be sure. Every single pick has a chance to turn into a boon for the organization for that team. Conversely, each first-round pick can become a colossal bust — especially first-round quarterbacks.
