The New England Patriots will head into the summer looking for a new starting quarterback for the first time in two decades. While Jarrett Stidham is the favorite to take over for Tom Brady, it appears Brian Hoyer might still have a shot for the top spot in New England.
According to NFL Network’s Michael Giardi, Stidham is expected to head into training camp as the presumed starter and will get early run with the No. 1 offense. However, Hoyer will be given a chance to prove himself and could begin the season under center if Stidham isn’t ready.
The Patriots signed Hoyer in March, reuniting the former backup quarterback with his old coaching staff. The 34-year-old spent his first three NFL seasons in New England, then returned to the organization in 2017 and later in the 2018 season.
Hoyer’s familiarity with the Patriots’ offensive system will give him a slight advantage over Stidham, who has just one season under Belichick.
Of course, expectations are already high for Stidham in New England. Entering his second season, the 23-year-old is viewed as the new face of the franchise. There will certainly be a significant amount of pressure on him following Brady’s departure, but the Patriots seem confident and ready to roll this season.
