Report: Texans HC Bill O’Brien calling teams about trade up into Round 1

The Houston Texans are currently without a first-round pick due to their trade with Miami last year for Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills. Head coach Bill O’Brien would like to change that situation and is reportedly calling teams to trade back into Round 1.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported this news Thursday, just a few hours before the first round is set to take place.

At this time, barring a trade, Houston’s first selection in the draft would be the 40th overall pick. They also have the 90th overall pick, the 111th overall pick, the 172nd overall pick and three seventh-round picks. That’s not a ton of draft capital to work with as they look to move back up into the first round. If you look at the 2021 NFL Draft things get even sketchier as Houston doesn’t have a single pick until 91st overall (in the third round).

With all that in mind, a trade up in this year’s draft would seem ill advised. Though, given his track record, O’Brien may not care what common sense dictates.
