The Miami Dolphins boast a league-high 14 picks with the 2020 NFL Draft approaching, the type of arsenal that could easily convince the Cincinnati Bengals to trade the No. 1 overall pick. However, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that the Dolphins plan to move up for Joe Burrow.
According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, general manager Chris Grier and head coach Brian Flores are firmly against moving the necessary picks to trade up for Burrow. While there are some in the Dolphins organization willing to do so, owner Stephen Ross isn’t expected to force a blockbuster trade.
The Bengals have made it known that they plan to select Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick on April 23. While they’ve received plenty of interest in the selection, including from the Dolphins, no team has come forward with the offer they’d need to move down.
At this point, it looks highly unlikely that the No. 1 overall pick will be traded. The Bengals have devoted much of their offseason to meeting with Burrow, both in-person and through video chat. Given the investments made on the defense and to the supporting cast on offense, Cincinnati made its intention to draft Burrow apparent.
As for the Dolphins, the likeliest scenario is drafting a quarterback with the No. 5 overall pick. Tua Tagovailoa carries medical red flags, but he’s also one of the most talented players in the 2020 NFL Draft. He received comparisons to Drew Brees for his exceptional accuracy and was even compared to Patrick Mahomes for his ability to throw on the run.
The Dolphins are also very interested in former Oregon Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert. Some reports have even suggested he is ranked ahead of Tagovailoa on Miami’s draft board.
Ultimately, the Dolphins will land one of their favorite quarterbacks with the No. 5 pick. From there, with the face of the franchise officially joining them, the Dolphins can devote the remainder of their picks to building a great team around him.
