Philadelphia 76ers center Al Horford has always been praised for his contributions on the court. Now with the NBA season suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the All-Star center is making an even greater impact away from the court.
Horford, whose journey has taken him across the world, will be giving back to the communities that helped shape him. He is donating $500,000 to the Dominican Republic, where he was born, along with every city where he has played during his basketball career.
As a result, Horford will be providing financial support to communities in need across the United States. From where his basketball career began in high school in Grand Ledge, Michigan to the community in Gainesville Florida for his time with the Florida Gators. He will also donate money to Atlanta, Boston and Philadelphia, providing some of the biggest cities in the United States with the support they desperately need.
Athletes and team owners from across professional sports have done incredible work to help support their communities. NFL players and owners generated over $35 million for COVID-19 relief and many NBA and MLB athletes are stepping up as well.
According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 225,000 people in the United States have tested positive for COVID-19.
