2020 NFL Draft: This team seems to be targeting Tua Tagovailoa

Tua Tagovailoa NFL Draft

As the 2020 NFL Draft nears, rumors regarding former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa dropping down the first round are heating up.

Tua is coming off a final season with the Crimson Tide that saw him suffer a serious hip injury. At least one expert believes that he’ll eventually have to get hip replacement surgery. This, despite the fact that he’s said to be 100% right now.

What does it all mean? Tagovailoa could go within the top-four picks or drop outside of the top half of the first round altogether. Though, there’s one team that makes the most sense for Tua.

Los Angeles Chargers: As veteran NFL media personality Evan Silva pointed out recently, Los Angeles’ moves during free agency seem to suggest that the team is indeed targeting Tagovailoa with the sixth overall pick.

This has not garnered enough traction around the league’s water cooler leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft. The Chargers traded Pro Bowl left tackle Russell Okung to the Carolina Panthers for right guard Trai Turner. They then signed veteran right tackle Bryan Bulaga. Tua is left handed. Do the math.

But there’s a whole lot more to this.

Quarterback need: Los Angeles let future Hall of Famer and longtime signal caller Philip Rivers depart in free agency.

  • Not only that, the Chargers opted not to add a veteran quarterback to the mix after missing out on Tom Brady. Cam Newton and Jameis Winston might still be free agents, but the Chargers have not shown real interest.
  • Instead, Los Angeles is set to head into the 2020 season with veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor as its starter. While he can be a serviceable starter, Taylor is not a long-term option.
  • General manager Tom Telesco seems to be not holding his cards close to the vest here. Los Angeles needs a quarterback. It’s in position to select one. The additions of two studs a long the right side of the offensive line adds another layer to this.

Bottom line

It might not be as much of a guarantee as the Cincinnati Bengals selecting Joe Burrow No. 1 overall, but we should hedge our bets that Tua will ultimately land in Southern California with the Chargers.

As I pointed out above, Los Angeles isn’t hiding what it has planned heading into the 2020 NFL Draft. This could lead to rumors about Tagovailoa dropping down the draft board being overblown.

Stay tuned!
