2020 NFL Draft: Second-round mock draft

NFL Draft, Day 2 mock

The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, but there is still plenty of talent left on the board. We often see that some of the game’s biggest stars come from Day 2 of the NFL Draft and that will likely be the case once again this year with some big names still available on Friday.

We came away with plenty of takeaways from the first round on Thursday, but Day 2 of the NFL Draft is where the best general managers make their mark. Teams like the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts traded down specifically to take advantage of this year’s deep draft class and the pool of talent available reflects their decisions paying off.

Let’s dive into Day 2 of the NFL Draft and take a look at what could happen with our mock draft of the second round.

Second Round

  • 33 – Cincinnati Bengals – Josh Jones, offensive tackle, Houston
  • 34 – New Orleans Saints (via IND)* – Kristian Fulton, cornerback, LSU
  • 35 – Detroit Lions – Ross Blalock, defensive tackle, TCU
  • 36 – New York Giants – Yetur Gross-Matos, edge rusher, Penn State
  • 37 – New England Patriots Grant Delpit, safety, Alabama
  • 38 – Carolina Panthers – Denzel Mims, wide receiver, Baylor
  • 39 – Miami Dolphins – Jonathan Taylor, running back, Wisconsin
  • 40 – Houston Texans (via ARZ) – Jaylon Johnson, cornerback, Utah
  • 41 – Cleveland Browns – Xavier McKinney, safety, Alabama
  • 42 – Jacksonville Jaguars – Michael Pittman Jr, wide receiver, USC

Note: Saints trade 2021 first-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 34 overall pick.

After taking their franchise quarterback, the Bengals use their next pick to make sure he is protected with a high-upside tackle prospect. The Saints want to make a big jump on Day 2 and with two second-round picks this year, the Colts happily take a first in 2021. The New England Patriots wait to take a quarterback, instead, strengthening their secondary with a top safety. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins grab an outstanding running back and create an incredible duo with Tua Tagovailoa and Jonathan Taylor.

  • 43 – Chicago Bears (via LAR) – Cole Kmet, tight end, Notre Dame
  • 44 – Indianapolis Colts – Jalen Hurts, quarterback, Oklahoma
  • 45 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – D’Andre Swift, running back, Georgia
  • 46 – Denver Broncos – Zack Baun, linebacker, Wisconsin
  • 47 – Atlanta Falcons – Marlon Davidson, defensive tackle, Auburn
  • 48 – New York Jets – Trevon Diggs, cornerback, Alabama
  • 49 – Pittsburgh Steelers – J.K. Dobbins, running back, Ohio State
  • 50 – Chicago Bears – Bryce Hall, cornerback, Virginia
  • 51 – Dallas Cowboys – Antoine Winfield Jr, safety, Minnesota
  • 52 – Los Angeles Rams – A.J. Epenesa, edge rusher, Iowa

The Colts take a chance on their quarterback of the future with Hurts, who can develop with an excellent coaching staff and even be used as an offensive weapon in his rookie season. The dream draft for the Buccaneers continues with D’Andre Swift falling into their lips, while the Steelers grab an excellent runner to strengthen their attack. The Cowboys would have loved to get McKinney, but Winfield Jr. will be a playmaker in their secondary.

  • 53 – Philadelphia Eagles – Darrell Taylor, edge rusher, Tennessee
  • 54 – Buffalo Bills – Cam Akers, running back, Florida State
  • 55 – Baltimore Ravens (via ATL) – Lloyd Cushenberry, center, LSU
  • 56 – Miami Dolphins (via NO) – Jeremy Chinn, safety, Southern Illinois
  • 57 – Los Angeles Rams (via HOU) – Robert Hunt, guard, Louisiana-Lafayette
  • 58 – Minnesota Vikings – Ezra Cleveland, offensive tackle, Boise State
  • 59 – Seattle Seahawks – Julian Okwara, edge rusher, Notre Dame
  • 60 – Baltimore Ravens – Laviska Shenault Jr, wide receiver, Colorado
  • 61 – Tennessee Titans – Raekwon Davis, defensive tackle, Alabama
  • 62 – Green Bay Packers – Tee Higgins, wide receiver, Clemson
  • 63 – Kansas City Chiefs (via SF) – Matt Hennessy, center, Temple
  • 64 – Seattle Seahawks (via KC) – Josh Uche, edge rusher, Michigan

The run on offensive skill players continues with the Bills adding Akers to create an electrifying duo with Devin Singletary. The Baltimore Ravens, after already taking advantage of one sliding LSU star, grab their new starter at center to solidify their offensive line. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings build upon their strong draft by grabbing a tackle that generated some first-round buzz. Rounding that out, the Ravens and Green Bay Packers add two talented receivers to help provide their quarterbacks with some help.
