Report: Dolphins, Bengals interested in star XFL receiver

The Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals have been two of the most aggressive teams in free agency this offseason. Now, both teams could reportedly be competing to sign the top receiver from this past XFL season.

According to The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Dolphins and Bengals are both interested in Houston Roughnecks wide receiver Cam Phillips. The 24-year-old emerged as a go-to target for quarterback P.J. Walker and dominated the XFL before it suspended the 2020 season.

An undrafted free agent out of the 2018 NFL Draft, Phillips signed with the Buffalo Bills in May of 2018. He signed to the practice squad before the regular season began then was added to the active roster in October, before finishing the season back on the practice squad.

The 6-foot receiver got his second chance in 2019, joining the XFL with an opportunity to prove himself. After being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 XFL Draft, Phillips quickly emerged as the top weapon in Houston’s offense. The chemistry he had with Walker, who signed with the Carolina Panthers, made Houston’s offense unstoppable this year.

He led the XFL in targets (44), receptions (31), receiving yards (455) and touchdowns (nine) across only five games of action. Phillips also showed plenty of big-play ability, averaging 14.7 yards per catch on the season.

The Dolphins and Bengals could both use more talent at receiver, especially with both teams projected to draft franchise-caliber quarterbacks in the latest mock draft. At a time when the passing game is more prominent than ever in the NFL, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Phillips attracts even more talent from across the league.
