Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and his wife, Kelly Stafford, have announced a financial commitment to help those in their city combat the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement was shared by the Lions’ official website, which noted the Stafford family has made two $100,000 commitments, along with setting up four individual $5,000 allotments at restaurants near four hospitals that are battling the rising tide of COVID-19 sufferers.

Forgotten Harvest, a food bank that delivers to local charities six days a week, is one of the groups that will receive $100,000. The other $100,000 donation will go to the Detroit Public Schools Community District, which is working to “provide immediate relief to students impacted by the crisis.”

For the Stafford family, this will serve two main goals.

“We’re going to take some heat off them and put some meals on us,” Stafford said. “It’s our way to say, ‘We appreciate you,’ and fuel them up for the fight.

“We’re just trying to inject some cash (in small business) and have those people staying safe.”

The Staffords have a history of supporting the Detroit community, which has of course also been a big source of support for the family during its recent time of need.

Another NFL quarterback, Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans, is also working to help feed emergency room workers and first responders in his hometown of Gainesville, Fla. and we have seen many professional athletes stepping up in a big way to provide financial support during this time of need.
