Report: Bears release CB Prince Amukamara, WR Taylor Gabriel in cap-saving moves

The Chicago Bears will reportedly release veteran starting cornerback Prince Amukamara and receiver Taylor Gabriel ahead of free agency.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the news of their release on Friday afternoon.

Amukamara, 30, is a former first-round pick of the New York Giants and has been a starter for Chicago the past three seasons. Cutting him saves the Bears $9 million against the cap, with $1 million in dead money.

Gabriel, a former undrafted rookie out of Abilene Christian, has been a productive receiver but missed seven games last year due to injury. Releasing him saves the Bears $4.5 million against the cap, with $2 million in dead money.

With these two roster moves, then, the Bears will save $13.5 million against the cap in 2020. A team that ranked near the bottom of the league with just $5.5 million in cap space, Chicago may not yet be done making roster moves ahead of free agency and the draft.
