Report: Georgia, star QB Jamie Newman a ‘likely match’

Jamie Newman

After announcing at the end of the year that he entered the transfer portal, former Wake Forest Demon Deacons quarterback Jamie Newman could reportedly be targeting the Georgia Bulldogs as his potential landing spot.

According to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, Newman and the Bulldogs are a “likely” match and there is growing sense that the Bulldogs could land him this offseason.

It would fill an immediate need for Georgia after it saw starting quarterback Jake Fromm declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Landing the top quarterback available on this year’s transfer market would be a significant boost for a program with CFB Playoff aspirations in 2020.

Newman was one of college football’s breakout stars in 2019. The junior carried the Demon Deacons to their second eight-win season in over a decade thanks to his dominance on the air and the ground.

He threw for 2,868 passing yards, averaged 7.9 yards per pass attempt and posted an impressive 145.4 quarterback rating. Newman also rushed for 574 yards and accounted for 32 total touchdowns on the season.

Despite losing multiple starters on the offensive line and running back D’Andre Swift, Georgia’s offense is still in good position to produce numbers next season. The Bulldogs will also deploy a stronger receiving corps that Newman could utilize.

Receiver George Pickens dominated in the Sugar Bowl and proved he’s ready to become a No.1 receiver. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs signed five-star athlete Darnell Washington and the 6-foot-8 tight end could be the perfect weapon to pair with Pickens in this aerial attack.

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported that Newman could make his decision on Saturday, which could mean this potential pairing becomes reality this weekend.
