Rams hiring former Redskins coach Kevin O’Connell to become offensive coordinator

Los Angeles Rams 2016 Schedule

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is bringing a familiar face into the fold as he’s reuniting with former Washington Redskins coach Kevin O’Connell.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and shortly afterward confirmed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, McVay is hiring O’Connell to be his offensive coordinator, which is the same position he held in D.C. this past season.

O’Connell is a former NFL quarterback who has found more success in his post-playing career. He started out as a quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns, was an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 and has been an offensive coach for Washington since the 2017 season.

Likely, O’Connell’s role in Los Angeles will be more geared toward game-planning and helping Jared Goff succeed as a passer, as McVay is the de facto play-caller on game days.
