Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins set a new market a couple years ago when he inked a fully-guaranteed three-year, $84 million contract.
This contract puts Cousins right up there with the top-paid quarterbacks in the league, which many have harped on due to his less-than-stellar history in big games.
Discussing this issue on the “Dan Patrick Show” Thursday morning, Cousins defended his salary, saying, “I would prefer there would be an awareness that’s the going rate these days,” per Andrew Perloff.
Cousins isn’t wrong. In fact, the latest rumors swirling around the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott indicate that Cousins’ $31 million cap hit in 2020 will look like child’s play.
Still, it’s hard to fault those who are down on the Vikings for shelling out the kind of cash they did to land a quarterback in Cousins who has largely failed to live up to expectations in his first couple of seasons in Minnesota.
Though, given the progress he made at the end of this past season and in the team’s first playoff game, perhaps that perception will change in 2020.
