After being part of the Minnesota Twins breakout 101-win season in 2019, bench coach Derek Shelton is reportedly drawing strong interest as a managerial candidate and has a good chance at landing a gig.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Shelton is a hot candidate around the league and has a good chance at becoming the Pittsburgh Pirates next manger.

Shelton’s coaching career began in 2005 as the Cleveland Indians hitting coach. After spending five seasons in Cleveland, he joined the Tampa Bay Rays in the same role from 2010-’16.

After serving as the Toronto Blue Jays quality control coach during the 2017 season, he joined Minnesota’s staff as its bench coach for the past two seasons.

Given Shelton’s extensive background working with hitters and his recent experience as a bench coach, he should be an appealing candidate for teams. The Pirates would likely be hoping his work with the Twins’ hitters during their historic 2019 season would help the Pirates’ young bats develop more in the coming years.
