The Carolina Panthers will trot out second-year quarterback Kyle Allen against the San Francisco 49ers next week. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is not yet ready to return from the Lisfranc injury he suffered back in Week 2.
This has not stopped other NFL teams from showing interest in Newton ahead of the Oct. 29 trade deadline.
“Yes, he’s struggled with injuries the past few seasons, but I can tell you for certain that teams are highly interested in him. Still, the former MVP is revered inside the organization, and his contract isn’t trade-friendly,” Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman reported on Wednesday.
Moving Newton midseason would be difficult. The oft-injured quarterback would have to learn a new offense on the fly. As noted, his contract also isn’t trade-friendly.
What we do know is that the Panthers might have found something in Allen. He’s won four consecutive games since taking over for the injured Newton, throwing seven touchdowns compared to zero interceptions in the process.
As it relates to Newton, he has lost each of his past eight starts and is set to count $21.1 million against the cap next season. Despite this, there’s still talent in the 30-year-old former league MVP.
