For all of you broke college students out there looking for that all-important beer money, take a page from Carson King’s playbook.
The diehard Iowa State fan was seen holding a sign that read “Busch Light Supply Needs Replenished” ahead of the team’s game against Iowa Saturday. ESPN’s “College Gameday” featured the sign.
Since then, King has received $36,000 in donations through his personal Venmo account. You read that right, $36,000.
“I didn’t think I’d get on TV at all,” King said, via ESPN. “We figured we might be able to catch an interview, see Maria (Taylor) or something. So we stood right there. Then they ended up being over there quite a bit.”
If this seems a bit ridiculous, that’s because it is. How much beer would $36,000 buy? Don’t test us on that theory. Signed, craft beer lovers the world over.
Something great did come out of this in the end. King ultimately decided to donate the money to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
This specific hospital has gained recognition in recent years as fans inside Kinnick Stadium have made it a tradition to wave towards patients at the end of the first quarter.
“It’s just a huge part of Iowa,” King said. “They help out kids from all over the country. They’re one of the best at what they do, and Iowa supports them. I figured this would be our way to help out.”
Rivalries be damned, this is an absolutely amazing story. It should serve as a reminder that there’s bigger things in life than football. Good stuff, Mr. King.
