Report: Pirates ace Jameson Taillon to undergo elbow surgery

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Out since May 1 with an elbow injury, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Jameson Taillon did not receive good news on that front Thursday.

Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon is expected to have surgery soon to repair his elbow flexor tendon, but doctors believe he will not require a second, extensive “Tommy John” The Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel reported.

Taillon, 27, started seven games earlier in the season. He pitched to a 2-3 record with a 4.10 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Last season saw the pitcher break out to the tune of a 14-10 mark with a 3.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while striking out 179 batters in 191 innings of work.

The time frame for recovery listed for an injury of this ilk is seven to nine months, meaning Taillon could be back on the bump for Pittsburgh by May. Time will only tell on that front.

For now, this can’t be seen as good news for the pitcher and his team. Though, the avoidance of Tommy John Surgery is some silver lining.
