The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers appear comfortable with the idea that he’ll play out the final year of his current deal.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, “the team and its star quarterback are both in agreement that the likely scenario is for Rivers to play out his contract and address his status following the 2019 season.”
So, like Tom Brady, Rivers will be a free agent after the 2019 season. This does not mean that Rivers will be hunting for another job, however. Assuming he does come back to play out his Age 39 season in 2020, he’ll be doing it with the only team he’s ever played for.
Rivers is set to earn just $16 million in 2019 (with $12 million guaranteed), which is a paltry sum compared to the kind of money most top quarterbacks are making these days. Yet his relatively low salary has allowed the Chargers to assemble one of the best overall rosters in the NFL today.
Clearly, a championship is foremost on Rivers’ mind.
