Raiders release former first-round pick Doug Martin, per report

Doug Martin

The Oakland Raiders have released veteran running back Doug Martin ahead of their preseason Week 4 contest, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

This past spring, Martin signed a one-year contract following the season-ending injury to Isaiah Crowell.

The veteran has been almost invisible this preseason for the Raiders, though, carrying the ball just twice for one yard in their second exhibition contest.

The 30-year-old former first-round pick out of Boise State was productive for Oakland last season. Appearing in all 16 games, he rushed for 723 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

However, Oakland selected Alabama running back Josh Jacobs in the first round this past April, and the Raiders love what Jalen Richard does in the passing game. Given that Martin isn’t a special-teams ace, it appears the team had to make room for a more diverse player.
