LOOK: Texas to honor Cedric Benson with helmet decal this season

Cedric Benson

The Texas Longhorn football family and the broader college football world was dealt a horrible loss earlier this month when all-time great running back Cedric Benson passed away on August 17 following a motorcycle accident.

We’ve already seen Benson’s former Cincinnati Bengals team pay homage to a man that was lost just 36 years into his young life.

Texas will now follow suit. The program will pay its respects to Mr. Benson by wearing a No. 32 decal on their helmets this season. It’s the jersey number he wore during a tremendous four-year career in Austin.

Benson finished his Longhorns tenure with the second-most rushing yards (5,540) in program history. As a senior in 2004, Benson received the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back and was recognized as a consensus All-American.

It goes without saying that the Texas football program is going through it right now. At the very least, they can get a sense of closure by paying their respects to Mr. Benson.

That will start Saturday evening at home against Louisiana Tech. Expect it to be an emotional affair for Tom Herman’s squad.
