Dodgers place Cy Young Candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu on injured list

The Los Angeles Dodgers might be getting one talented arm into the mix Friday, but they are going to be without a top Cy Young candidate for at least two starts.

Los Angeles placed veteran Hyun-Jin Ryu on the injured list Friday with neck soreness. This comes the same day that top prospect Dustin May is expected to make his MLB debut.

The expectation here is that Los Angeles will play it close to the vest with Ryu. A first-time All-Star this season, the South Korea native is pitching to an eye-opening 11-2 record with a 1.53 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. He leads the NL in each of the last two categories.

Boasting a 16-game lead in the National League West and a 6.5-game lead for the league’s best record, there’s no reason to rush Ryu back on to the mound.

As it relates to May, he’ll make his debut as a starter against the San Diego Padres Friday evening. The former third-round pick is currently Los Angeles’ No. 2 prospect. He pitched to a 3-0 record with a 2.30 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in five Triple-A starts before getting the call.
