Report: Blue Jays, Braves discussing potential blockbuster trade

The Atlanta Braves got some pretty bad injury news relating to two of their core hitters on Saturday.

Primarily, outfielder Nick Markakis is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a fractured wrist.

Struggling through a bit of a dry spell recently, Atlanta still finds itself 5.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals heading into Saturday’s action.

The team is also apparently looking to add to its young core group. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, that could include pulling off a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The headliner here would obviously be All-Star starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. It’s not insignificant in that Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos left the Blue Jays for his current post back in 2015.

Toronto’s brass had previously pushed back against the idea of working with him.

Despite boasting a top-three of Mike Soroka, Dallas Keuchel and Max Fried, Atlanta has been in the market for starting pitching help. Most recently, it has been linked to New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard.

Ken Giles could also be an interesting fit in Atlanta. The Braves’ bullpen has struggled to a great extent this season. Having pitched to a 1.59 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the season, the closer would certainly help in that regard.
