Red Sox legend Pumpsie Green passes away at 85

The Boston Red Sox and larger Major League Baseball world lost a true legend on Wednesday with the passing of former infielder Pumpsie Green at the age of 85.

The first African-American player in Red Sox history, Green broke the organization’s color barrier back in 1959 — more than a decade after Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color barrier.

A member of the Red Sox for four seasons, Green hit just .246 with 13 homers. But his impact was much more than that. He was just inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame last summer.
