The San Diego Padres pulled off an interesting three-team trade Tuesday evening that included the team landing Cincinnati Reds No. 1 prospect Taylor Trammell.
This trade included San Diego giving up youngsters Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and Victor Nova.
Given that San Diego had been linked to Noah Syndergaard in the past, it was a surprise to see the team yield Major League talent for a minor leaguer, no matter how highly regarded Trammell is.
One day after that blockbuster, this report from Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports indicates that the Padres were never close to pulling off a Syndergaard trade.
They viewed New York’s asking price for the ace as too expensive.
Once Syndergaard took to the bump for New York, one day before the trade deadline, it became clear that he was not going to be traded.
That’s been confirmed in the hours leading up to the deadline on Wednesday.
After acquiring Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays this past weekend, the Mets pivoted from the idea of moving Syndergaard. They believe contention could be the name of the game in 2020 with the two joining Jacob deGrom atop the rotation.
As it relates to the Padres, they still want to find that top-end starter to team up with youngster Chris Paddack. But that’s now going to have to wait until the winter.
