NFL odds: Which team is expected to have worst record in the NFL?

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Taking a look at the latest NFL odds, it’s quite clear that the Oakland Raiders are expected to tank in their final year in Northern California.

But which team has the “best” odds to finish with the worst record in the NFL? According to the odds-makers at MyTopSportsbooks.com, there is a surprise team atop the list.

1.    Miami Dolphins: 5/1
2.    Arizona Cardinals: 6/1
3.    Oakland Raiders: 9/1
4.    Washington Redskins: 11/1
5.    New York Giants: 12/1
6.    Cincinnati Bengals: 12/1
7.    FIELD: 9/5

Why the Dolphins?

While the Fins are expected to struggle during the 2019 NFL season, it’s surprising that they are the odds-on favorites to finish with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. They have made it clear they are not tanking this coming season, which was the hot rumor throughout the early offseason.

Still, it’s going to either be Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh Rosen under center, and that combination could lead to some rather interesting fireworks…for opposing teams.

Arizona with the second-best odds to finish worst in the NFL isn’t surprising at all. Though a case could be made that they have the talent to surprise us all, we’re still looking at a team that has a completely unproven rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback. Also, Patrick Peterson is out the first six games of the season, and with him gone the Arizona defense is a hot mess.

The Raiders at three is a conundrum for bettors looking at these odds. Oakland has some fantastic offensive talent, and if Derek Carr surges with said talent the Raiders could be much better than people think. Though, the defense could still be a problem, and of course there is a ton of volatility in the organization with “Hard Knocks” coming soon.

There’s no argument from us about the bottom three teams. Washington, New York and Cincinnati are all franchises that are facing uphill climbs this season, for various reasons.

That being said, don’t be surprised if a team from the “field” ends up picking first come next April. The NFL is nothing if not unpredictable from year to year.
