Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton to begin rehab assignment next week

After progressing nicely during an extended spring training game on Friday, New York Yankees All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is set to begin a rehab assignment early next week.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Saturday that New York’s star outfielder would head to Class-A Tampa on Monday or Tuesday and play a few rehab games.

If he can avoid another setback, Stanton would then go to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and resume his rehab assignment with New York’s top minor-league affiliate.

Stanton is making his way back from a calf strain he suffered during his rehab stint while recovering from a shoulder strain. The All-Star’s calf injury is the third injury he has dealt with this season.

Whenever he returns to full health, Stanton’s big bat will be a welcome addition for the Yankees. New York is ninth in OPS (.778) and eighth in runs scored (328) despite Stanton, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Didi Gregorius missing significant time this season.
