WATCH Gary Sanchez passes Yogi Berra on important Yankees list

If there’s one name synonymous with New York Yankees baseball outside of Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth, it has to be Yogi Berra. The former catcher is a strong reminder of the Pinstripe’s heralded past.

He’s now been outdone by young catcher Gary Sanchez. The backstop hit his 19th homer of the season off Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trent Thornton Wednesday evening.

He’s now surpassed Berra for the most homers from a Yankees catcher prior to the All-Star Break.

As noted, it’s still only June 5. Sanchez will have a ton more opportunities to add to that total before the Midsummer Classic.

For Sanchez, his 2019 performance has seemingly come out of nowhere. Here’s a guy that hit .186 with 18 homers last season. It led to trade speculation during the winter. That’s obviously no longer the case.
