Lakers request meeting with D’Angelo Russell, per report

Just a few years after being traded away by the Los Angeles Lakers, All-Star point guard D’Angelo Russell could now meet with the Lakers after free agency opens on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Los Angeles reached out to Russell’s agents and requested a meeting with the 23-year-old. There is reportedly mutual interest in making a reunion happen.

After being drafted with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Russell’s run with the Lakers ended after two disappointing seasons. He then found new life with a change of scenery in Brooklyn and it led to an All-Star season in 2018-’19 with career-best marks in points (21.1), assists per game (7.0) and a 43.4 field goal percentage.

Russell is drawing interest around the league and is also scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He’ll likely also draw interest from a number of other teams with room to sign him to a max contract, though the chance to return to Los Angeles and team up with LeBron James and Anthony Davis could prove very tempting.
