New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano was benched for Monday night’s game against the Washington Nationals for a lack of hustle. He might have gotten the message.

While he didn’t start on Monday, Cano did pinch hit. Not only did Cano rip a double in that at-bat, but he got to second faster than he has in years.

Cano failed to run out two double play balls over the weekend as the Mets were swept by the lowly Miami Marlins. He also was the reason one of his teammates got knocked out cold before that.

A lack of hustle is never good. It especially stands out when the player in underperforming. Unfortunately, Cano falls into that category, as well. With his double, he’s hitting .250/.297/.384 with only three home runs.

Maybe Monday’s double with a quick home-to-second time is a step in the right direction for both issues. The Mets and their fans certainly hope so.
