Hawks to pass up on star G Ja Morant?

In an ideal world, the Atlanta Hawks would nab the No. 1 overall pick in next month’s NBA Draft when lottery numbers are drawn Tuesday evening.

Though, Atlanta boasts the fifth-best odds. This means the team is unlikely to nab Duke’s Zion Williamson.

If Atlanta were to get the second pick, this report from Sean Deveney of the Sporting News notes that the team would pass up on Murray State star Ja Morant.

In lieu of Morant, the Hawks would either trade out of that spot or select Texas Tech wing Jarrett Culver.

This is a somewhat surprising report. Morant is largely considered the second-best player in the draft.

The issue here is that Atlanta has a similar player in that of Trae Young, who absolutely dominated as a rookie this past season.

Culver stands at 6-foot-5 and would team up with Young to form an elite young backcourt. Last season saw him average 18.5 points on 46% shooting from the field.
