Drew Brees has never discussed retirement plans with Sean Payton

Drew Brees is 40 years old and entering his 19th season in the NFL, but head coach Sean Payton says he and his quarterback have never once discussed any retirement plans.

Payton was doing an interview with Jim Rome on the “Jim Rome Show” Thursday when the conversation turned to the veteran quarterback’s future.

Sean Payton has never sat with Brees to talk about QB’s future from The Jim Rome Show on Vimeo.

“We both look at it like it’s not even on the horizon,” Payton said of Brees’ eventual retirement. “It doesn’t feel like it’s been 13 years. It feels like it’s been seven or eight years.”

Payton also mentioned how Brees is performing at such a high level still, which is impossible to argue against. Last season at the age of 39, the veteran passed for 3,992 yards with 32 touchdowns and just five interceptions. And if not for one of the worst non-calls in NFL history at the end of the NFC Championship, the Saints would have been playing in Super Bowl LIII.

In the past, Brees has talked about playing into his mid-40s. He’s well on his way, and if the Saints can continue to pile up wins while contending for championships, it’s hard to imagine he’ll walk away any time soon.
