49ers release OT Anthony Davis, making him free agent

Anthony Davis hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he retired from the game for a second time due to concerns about his health.

Now he’s attempting to make a second comeback. To that end, the San Francisco 49ers, who still owned his rights, have released Davis.

Davis was originally a first-round pick out of Rutgers in 2010. He played at an high level and started every game with the 49ers for his first four seasons. Then, he missed half the 2014 season before sitting out the entire 2015 campaign. Davis then came back for one game in 2016 before abruptly retiring once more.

The former 49ers offensive tackle applied for reinstatement on May 3, and now he’ll have a chance to sign with any team that wants to give him another shot.
