Jacob deGrom joins Hall of Fame company in historic outing

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom did something on Wednesday that’s only been done by few others — most of whom are in the Hall of Fame.

On the mound, deGrom was his usual dominant self. He allowed three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings and struck out 14. At the plate, deGrom helped his own cause with a home run (watch here).

In doing so, he became only the ninth pitcher to ever strike out 14 and homer in the same game. Per Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, six of the others are enshrined in Cooperstown.

That’s a fantastic list. And as good as it is now, it could get better.

As active players, deGrom and Madison Bumgarner are obviously both ineligible for the Hall of Fame. But it’s not outrageous to think that eventually, either or both will end up there. At some point, this list of nine pitchers could well include eight Hall of Famers.

That’s some pretty impressive company to keep.
