Greg Bird out at least a month with foot injury

Young New York Yankees 1B Greg Bird will undergo ankle surgery.

The New York Yankees were already the most injury-prone team in MLB and are now sending another star, Greg Bird, to the injured list.

The team announced the roster move on Tuesday, noting the 10-day designation would be retroactive to Sunday and that Mike Ford would be called up to take his roster spot.

Given the fact that Bird suffered a left plantar fascia tear, it stands to reason he’ll be out of commission for much longer than 10 days. Indeed, manager Aaron Boone expects him to miss at least a month.

The first baseman hasn’t been tearing the cover off the ball so far this year, batting .171 with just one home run and one RBI.

New York itself has gotten off to a slow start as well, thanks to all the injuries, and sports a 6-9 record at this time.
